Joseph Parker may look to fight world heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk or get back in the ring with Anthony Joshua after the New Zealander easily defeated Deontay Wilder on points in Saudi Arabia.
According to David Higgins, the promoter of Joseph Parker of New Zealand, the British fighter may be spared from this “high risk” bout even though Parker has “earned” a rematch with Anthony Joshua.
Parker’s unanimous decision victory over Deontay Wilder in Saudi Arabia this weekend derailed hopes for a much-anticipated matchup between Joshua and Wilder in 2024.
Parker is aiming for another fight with Anthony Joshua
In Cardiff in 2018, Joshua overcame Parker on points to unify the WBO, WBA, and IBF championships; nevertheless, Higgins is hoping to see a rematch soon.
Parker’s promoter David Higgins told Sky Sports that Parker “has earned that fight in my opinion and the Saudis would see merit in Parker against Anthony Joshua.”
I believe it’s the fight that fans want to see, but it might not be next and there might be some work to be done. It’s a fight decided by merit.
Joseph is willing to take on any opponent, and his resume features a long list of opponents, including Derek Chisora twice, Joe Joyce, Joshua, Wilder, and Dillian Whyte, all of whom he has defeated at the age of just 31.
In a heartbeat, we’ll fight Anthony Joshua. Though it’s widely known that Joseph will fight him next, I’m not sure it’s a viable choice. Of course, we’ll consider all options and see what materialises.
I can’t speak for Anthony Joshua’s team, but I imagine they’re attempting to get back to a place where they can compete against opponents like Tyson Fury or Oleksandr Usyk.
Parker defeated Deontay Wilder via unanimous decision
Fury, the lineal heavyweight champion, provides the best sparring; it was really beneficial.
Higgins complimented trainer Andy Lee for coming up with the winning strategy and thinks Parker gave a career-best performance against Wilder. It was, in my opinion, Joseph’s best performance to date, according to Higgins.
I say that because there is a unique pressure associated with those large-scale, worldwide pay-per-view live boxing tonight fight; you can’t truly understand the pressure until you’ve experienced it yourself. Not only are you up against one of the most feared punchers in history, but the entire world is watching you.
He had failed once or twice in his career, but this time he persevered, remained composed, demonstrated his aim, followed the battle strategy, and handled pressure well. He not only prevailed but also outclassed Wilder.
Higgins hopes that Parker, who has already engaged in four fights this year, can make another one in March because of his consistency, which has given him momentum.
